  26.     * Having trouble beating Dale Earnhart Jr. in Race The Pro?  Try loading
  27. the advanced setup in the garage to get that extra edge.
  28.  
  29.     * At Daytona drafting is the only way to stay competitive.  Stay right 
  30. behind the driver you are trying to pass until you see a good opportunity to pass him.
  31.  
  32.     * If you are using the keyboard to race try going to the advanced controls 
  33. screen and turn your steering speed down to 1/2 or less.

  38. 2. Installation Issues
  39. ======================

  41. If you uninstall the game, your saved replays, custom paintjobs, car setups,
  42. and other configuration information will not be deleted automatically.
  43. You can delete these files yourself from:
  44.  
  45.     "c:\Program Files\Hasbro Interactive\NASCAR Heat Demo"
  46.  
  47. after first uninstalling the program normally.
  48.  
  49. When you run the game, we may warn that your video card drivers are
  50. out of date.  This occurs when you are running the game on a machine
  51. without the most recent video card drivers.  Incorrectly installed or
  52. old video drivers are one of the most frequent causes of game crashes.

  56. 3. Joystick and Steering Wheel Support
  57. ======================================
  58.  
  59. When using a joystick or wheel, the controller must be installed and
  60. calibrated within Windows before it will work in the game.
  61.  
  62. If your input is "jerky", you should try unchecking the option to
  63. "Poll with Interrupts Enabled" in the Windows Game Controller control
  64. panel, under the "Advanced" tab.
  65.  
  66. Note that if there are multiple controllers, we will use the first
  67. controller in the ID list.  If you want to use your second controller,
  68. you can edit the file options.cfg in Notepad and change the line
  69.   "controller_id 0" to "controller_id 1"
  70.

  73. 4. How to improve performance
  74. =============================
  75.  
  76. a. Use the benchmark in the Graphics Options Screen to test the
  77. performance of your machine. Keep lowering your detail level and draw
  78. distance until the benchmark is at least 35 fps.
  79.  
  80. b. Please note that the benchmark button only tests the speed of the
  81. graphics system.  The frame rate reported does not take into account
  82. the number of cars that you are running.  
  83.  
  84. c. Your choice of video card is primarily responsible for determining
  85. which video resolutions that you can use in the game.  The faster your
  86. video card is, the higher the video resolution you can run with a good
  87. frame rate.

  91. 5. Specific Video Card Issues
  92. =============================
  93.  
  94. Most problems we have experienced while running NASCAR Heat are due
  95. to running the game with old video drivers.  Please contact your
  96. video card manufacturer for the latest drivers.
  97.  
  98. The following video cards have experienced a problem while running
  99. our game:
  100.  
  101. * ATI Rage Pro, ATI Rage Mobility
  102.  
  103.     This video card is a first generation video card with very slow
  104.     performance and graphics artifacts.  
  105.  
  106. * S3 ViRGE Series
  107.  
  108.     This video card is a first generation video card with very slow
  109.     performance and graphics artifacts.
  110.  
  111. * S3 Savage 2000 (Diamond Viper II)
  112.  
  113.     This video card might shift textures on the objects.  If you
  114.     are having problems with the card, you can edit the options.cfg
  115.     file (located in the "c:\Program Files\Hasbro Interactive\NASCAR Heat Demo\Config")
  116.     and find the line "fix_s3_bug no" in the [GX] section. Change the line
  117.     to read "fix_s3_bug yes".
  118.  
  119. * 3D Labs Permedia 2
  120.  
  121.     Video cards with this chip are missing some features that make
  122.     special effects look not as good.
  123.  
  124. * 3Dfx Voodoo 1
  125.  
  126.     This card does not have enough video RAM to run the game well.  The
  127.     video resolutions and the texture resolutions are severely limited.
  128.  
  129.     If you want to use your primary graphics card instead of the 3Dfx card,
  130.     modify the shortcut by appending " -1" to the shortcut as described for
  131.     the Voodoo 2 below.
  132.  
  133. * 3Dfx Voodoo 2
  134.  
  135.     This card cannot support large textures. Otherwise, the 8 megabyte
  136.     version looks like most 4 megabyte cards and the 12 Megabyte version
  137.     looks like an 8 megabyte card.
  138.  
  139.     If you want to use your primary graphics card instead of the 3Dfx card,
  140.     modify the startmenu shortcuts by appending " -1" to the
  141.     shortcut's target. For example:
  142.       "c:\Program Files\Hasbro Interactive\NASCAR Heat Demo\NASCAR Heat Demo.exe" -1
  143.     You must launch the game using the shortcut for the change to occur.
  144.  
  145. * 3Dfx Voodoo 3
  146.  
  147.     This card cannot support large textures and does not support AGP
  148.     textures.
  149.  
  150. * 3Dfx Voodoo 5
  151.     This card does not support AGP textures
  152.  
  153. We recommend the latest video cards from any of the manufacturers.  At
  154. our office, we run nVidia GeForce series, the 3Dfx Voodoo 5, the
  155. Matrox G400, and the ATI Rage 128/Rage 128 Pro/Radeon.

  159. 6. Game Controls
  160. ====================

  162. a. In-Game Controls:

  164.     'P' - Pause/Resume (note: does not work in Multiplayer)
  165.  
  166.     ESC -  brings up the Escape Menu -- use the Up and Down keys to choose
  167.     a selection and press the enter key to select.

  169.     'T' - While in Multiplayer, press 'T' to chat -- type a message and
  170.     press ENTER to send it.

  172. b. Camera Controls:

  174.     F1 - In-Car Views: Switches between Cockpit View and Bumper Cam

  176.     F3 - Chase Views - switches between Near, Medium, and Far

  216. e. Default Controls: (these keys can be reassigned in the Control Options menu)

  219.     A - Upshift (if Auto-shifting is not enabled)

  225.     The default driving controls will depend on what sort of
  226.     controller you have.

  246. 7. Compatibility Issues
  247. =======================

  249. a. RealJukebox - we have problems running with this
  250. software.
  251.  
  252. b. nVidia Reference drivers v 3.68 - the screen may lock up after a
  253. long time, requiring a hard reboot.
  254.  
  255. c. ATI Rage Pro - some versions of their drivers have clipping
  256. problems.  The mirror and the replay screen will have graphical
  257. glitches.
  258.  
  259. d. ALT-TAB - We don't recommend alt-tabbing away from the game.
  260.  
  261. ====================================
  262. 8. Windows 2000 / Windows NT 4.0
  263. ====================================
  264.  
  265. NASCAR Heat will not run under Windows NT.  Although we don't
  266. officially support Windows 2000, the game will run.  If you
  267. run under Windows 2000, you might experience the following issues:
  268.  
  269. 1. Poor video card support.  Windows 2000 shipped with spotty support
  270. for many 3D video cards.  If the game crashes or won't run, you
  271. should contact your video card manufacturer for the latest Windows
  272. 2000 video card drivers.
  273.  
  274. 2. Poor joystick/wheel support.  The code to read the joystick in
  275. Windows 2000 may produce "jerky" input.  We have seen this problem
  276. appear on some computers and is caused by how Windows 2000 reads the
  277. joystick.
  278.  
  279. 3. Multi-processor support.  We have tested the game on a
  280. multi-processor systems and the performance was great.
